The economic potential of wind energy has recently become a hot topic in North Carolina for several reasons:
- The state’s first wind farm (Amazon Wind Farm East) is going up in Pasquotank County—and projected to deliver $520,000 in tax contributions and $624,000 in landowner payments during the first year of operation.
- A second project (Timbermill Wind), representing a $300 million investment, has been planned for Perquimans and Chowan
- In June, a controversial new piece of legislation (HB763) was introduced that could stop all wind development and investment in the state. Supporters of House Bill 763 (the Military Operations Protections Act) say they aren’t trying to stop wind development — rather they suggest they are trying to protect military flight paths. However, as widely reported, opponents of the bill say it is more limiting than what the military itself requires.
