Even the most independent among us, if fortunate to live long enough, may experience a decline in mobility or health that can strip away our independence and diminish the quality of our lives. Seniors represent the fastest growing population segment in the U.S. as one quarter of today’s 65-year-olds will live past the age of 90.
For more than 40 years the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Meals on Wheels program has delivered hot lunches Monday through Friday to the elderly, disabled, recuperating or anyone with a health issue who is unable to prepare a meal for themselves.
In 1997 we delivered 200 meals a week and our recipients could contribute enough to cover 80% of the cost. In 2016 we delivered 850 meals each week, but our recipients’ payments could only cover 20% of the cost. The maximum was ask a client to pay is $5.00 per meal.
Chapel Hill-Carrboro Meals on Wheels receives no federal or state funding and no-one is ever refused services because of lack of income. Our goal is to serve all seniors as they age in place where they are happiest. However, because of the increase in demand and decrease in ability to pay we need committed support from the community to help our seniors in need.
Therefore, on Tuesday, March 14, 2017 we are asking all Chapel Hill and Carrboro restaurants to participate in a March Madness Meals on Wheels Charity Day. Our hope is that all participating restaurants would donate 10% of their proceeds to Meals on Wheels. If you are interested, please contact either Stacey Yusko at Stacey@chcmow.org or Brent Wall at HT18inbox@thehickorytavern.com.
Thank you for your support!
