Taking Care of Business | The New Manufacturing Economy
The new manufacturing economy is centered around “niche” businesses who satisfy the needs of small consumer markets by offering what customers want, when they want it. The primary foundation of this strategy is selling less of more. Adopting the efficiencies of digital and Web-based technologies into current business strategies is a strong emerging trend in manufacturing practices.
This new field of possibilities has fostered the emergence of a “maker culture”, learning-through-doing in a social environment. It emphasizes informal, networked, peer-led, and shared learning motivated by fun and self-fulfillment. Maker culture encourages novel applications of technologies, and the exploration of intersections between traditionally separate domains and ways of working.
Meet Gart Davis
Gart Davis describes himself as a Technology Executive and an Entrepreneur, who enjoys contributing to projects that transform industries for the benefit of consumers.
As an executive in raw startups and large post-IPO companies, he has led teams responsible for acquisition integration, sales turnarounds, international expansion, and brand creation from nothing to millions of members.
In 2008, he co-founded Spoonflower.com, along with his partner and Stephen Fraser. Using web-based tools and on-demand manufacture, Spoonflower gives individuals the power to publish, purchase and sell fabric with their own custom designs. It has become the largest custom fabric supplier on the Internet, and hosts the largest collection of fabric designs and community of fabric designers anywhere.
Profitable after just 6 months, the company won an NC Idea Grant, the Amex/Facebook Big Break for Small Business, and is an NC Company to Watch.
